Choosing the Right HVAC Contractor

Wise Words from John Ruskin

"It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that is all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it cannot be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better in the first place. There is hardly anything in the world that someone can't make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey." - John Ruskin (1819-1900)

How do you choose the right Heating and Air Conditioning Contractor? This is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make for your home or your business.

Do you suffer from "low bidder syndrome"?

We're often called in on a job where we quoted a higher price to try and make the system work after the "cheaper" contractor botched it up. This can end up costing you more than our quote was in the first place, and you end up with a repaired system that will never be what you intended when you spent the money.

What is the best way to choose a contractor?

Find someone who is highly recommended — someone you can trust — and go with their recommendations and their price. The contractor that you choose is actually more important than the brand name that you choose. Your heating and air conditioning equipment is not merely a household appliance like a refrigerator or dishwasher. It is a field designed/assembled system that requires meticulous professional installation. There are many, and we emphasize, many things that can go wrong that are caused by an inexperienced, uncaring, or cost conscious installer on an installation. We have seen systems that were ruined upon start-up or a few months' service. Many times the customer was not aware of the installation deficiencies until years later. What are the advantages of choosing a small or one-person shop?

  • SKILL LEVEL and experience
  • ETHICAL business practices
  • RAPPORT - Solid, long-lasting relationships
  • CONTENTED CUSTOMERS - A small contractor must keep every customer happy in order to stay in business.
  • PROFESSIONALISM - Logic may dictate that because a business employs many workers that it is somehow automatically a more professional organization. Not necessarily! The small company relies on professionalism to compete and to build a customer base.
  • ORGANIZED - Their trucks are usually cleaner and better organized, with more logical inventory.
  • FAMILIARITY - We are personally familiar with all of our customers' equipment and its history.

What are the disadvantages of choosing a large company?

  • SKILL LEVEL - Along with a large workforce comes a lack of consistent skill level. Some technicians may simply replace parts, rather than properly finding and addressing the problem. Others may not be skilled in the repair or installation of your equipment.
  • RAPPORT - With a large company, you risk being just another number.
  • ATTITUDE - Technicians with larger companies do not always have good attitudes.
  • TECHNICIAN DISUNITY - Competition among technicians does not work in the customer's favor.
  • INTEGRITY - Some companies compensate their technicians with a modest salary and instruct them to make up the difference with "spiffs" (a bonus or other form of remuneration given to technicians for promoting the sales and installation of repairs or products). The customer may not know for sure that the repair or replacement is necessary if the technician is more interested in selling the parts than addressing the problem.

Remember, you are not just purchasing a piece of equipment – you are purchasing a contractor!
